Trey McMillan is the founder and owner of Lowcountry Oyster Co., the Eastern Seaboard’s premier oyster farm located about 34 miles south of Charleston, SC, in the ACE Basin Wildlife Refuge, specializing in a sustainable, floating-cage oyster farming system. A Charleston native and avid outdoorsman, McMillan grew up with a deep love of and connection to fishing, shrimping and crabbing, which led to a successful 15+ year career as a professional sport fisherman. The idea for Lowcountry Oyster Co. was born out of a 2015 visit to an oyster farm in the Chesapeake Bay that ignited McMillian’s passion for oyster farming, and the rest, as they say, is history. McMillan founded Lowcountry Oyster Co. in 2017, and oyster sales began in May 2018. Since then, Lowcountry Oyster Co. has secured its reputation of providing South Carolina with the freshest locally grown oysters year-round through its signature Lowcountry Cups, found and adored in raw bars and restaurants nationwide. McMillan’s commitment to sustainable oyster farming practices and expertise through founding and leading Lowcountry Oyster Co. has led him to other well-deserved and esteemed titles, including President of the South Carolina Shellfish Growers Association and South Carolina’s State Representative for the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association. McMillan also serves on the board of the Lowcountry Oyster Festival.
